The white border is reflective of the limitations of your printer. There is nothing you can do about it because your printer “needs” a blank surface to grip the paper and feed it through.

In the printing industry, they acheive what is called a “full bleed” by printing the color slightly large than the final size, and, on lager paper. Then the page is “cropped” or trimmed down to the final size, with the color(s) going all the way to the edge.

In your situation, if 8.5 by 11 inch paper is the maximum size the printer can handle, your only choice is to trim the paper to a smaller size that include the entire block of color.

Are you trying to print all the way to the edge of the paper? If so, most printers will not do this unless the are built specifically for that purpose. The Epson R200 for example, will allow you to do this with certain heavy paper types if you set it to do so in the print dialog.

If your printer has the capability of doing this and it is turned on, make sure that the page settings in Illustrator are correct for your file. If you are increasing the size of the artwork to make it fit to the page make sure you have selected Fit to Page or set a custom scale in the print dialog as well.

Printers cannot print all the way to the edge of the paper. Its not Illustrator that is causing the white border, its the printer itself.

For ‘full-bleed’ jobs (technical print term for graphics that go beyond the cut edge) print houses use a larger sheet of paper (try 11×17) with the graphics ‘bleeding’ over the intended final dimensions, then they trim the edges off, cropping the paper back down to 8.5×11. If your design does not have to be exactly 8.5×11, you can just slightly shrink your entire layout in Illustrator, then trim off the white edges.
