Try to Re-install it.

I have bit defender 2009, and when I get this message I just reboot my computer.
It’s a pain, but i’ve been able to do a scan after the reboot is complete.

the error sounds like you are setup to run a timed scheduel scan…you should try a manual scan on your computer.
