All my computers run win xp and share a printer which is attached to one computer as a local. I bought a laptop with vista and when i try to connect to the printer i get this error. “Windows cannot connect to the printer. Access is denied.” How do i fix this?

Just fought this problem myself and found this answer from another user to be wonderfully helpful.

which stated

Vista pings network devices using the LLTP Responder. XP doesn’t have a responder so you have to:

1. Download and install it from microsoft website.

2. Then enable file and printer sharing on both machines.

3. Add both machines to the same workgroup.

4. On Vista PC go to “Control Panel” – “Printers” – “Add printer”.

- Believe or not, click “Add a local printer” (I know you want to add a network printer but that way it doesn’t work).

- Click “Create a new port” – “Local Port” – “Next”

- In the next box you have to enter a port name like this:

\PC name\Printer name

where “PC name” is the network name of the XP PC or Network Share where you have the printer and “Printer name” is the network name of that printer. Be careful with this names. Check in your XP PC “Control Panel” – “Printers and faxes” – “your printer” – right click – “share” – “share resources name”

- Choose the manufacturer and printer model of the printer you are adding.

- Now the printer will be added and you can print a test page or print something to test it. 5. Make sure you have file and print sharing as an exception in the firewall.

I googled LLTD Responder and it brought me to the Microsoft download page, then followed the rest and my vista laptop is printing on the XP network
