I think you are asking about a “barcode scanner. ” Possibly a POS (point-of-sale) system.

When keeping inventory in a store, it isn’t one particular machine, but a system of things.

First, when “stuff” comes into the store, it gets added to the inventory count – usually using a computer. Then as people buy things, the UPC (Universal Product Code) bar code is read by the scanner at the casheir’s POS station. This subtracts things from the inventory.
