What you’ll find is that some people’s expectations are higher than the hardware can handle, while others are less so. Going by someones review is great, but seeing examples is even better.

If you want cheap and high quality then it’s not going to save to a memory card. Don’t let that stop you though, there’s plenty of good scanners out there.

Canon has a few in its Lide series that are reasonably priced. They also derive their power from the USB cable and are made to be portable. So if you’re not wanting a bulky scanner around this may be a good alternative.

Epson makes some great scanners. It’s basically the benchmark for non-film scanners that scan film. Flatbeds. The V500 is great for most people’s needs, but they have less expensive ones as well.

For a dedicated film scanner the Plustek line of scanners is very well regarded. There’s 4 scanners that look the same. They basically are with a few difference. IR dust removal (I find this indispensable since it gets rid of any hairs or dirt on the slides) and a software upgrade. This line of scanners is more expensive than the others I’ve mentioned but if it’s quality you want then you get what you pay for.

The Wolverine F2D-14 is one “scanner” that’s both inexpensive and saves to an SD card. It doesn’t have dust removal though. The optics are apparently very good though. (I say “scanner” since in reality it’s a point and shoot camera in a box with a light source, but the optics in it are apparently rather good).
